The Sac State men's crew club was looking for a starting point for progress.

At Saturday's Golden State Indoor Rowing Championship at the CSUS Aquatic Center, the club took nine of the top 10 positions in the collegiate open event and four of the top five places in the lightweight division, both 2000-meter events.

A benchmark of that sort makes for some great expectations.

Put simply, “We may have the best Sac State men's rowing team ever,” rower Chris Manibusan said.

Toby Johnson placed first in the collegiate open event with a time of 6:18.4. Russell Grimes took second in 6:22.2. Phil Morrow took fourth in 6:33.7.

Anthony Sacco placed first in the lightweight division in 6:31.7. Adam Zastrow was third in 6:39.4.

Men's rowing coach Sam Sweitzer said that the team looks great.

“Considering that we are coming off our winter break, we are way ahead of where we were last year at this time,” Sweitzer said. “We are in a great place with a month before the season starts.”

Next up for the men is the March 6 meeting against St. Mary's College. The event will also be held at the CSUS Aquatic Center. This is the beginning of it all,” Morrow said.
