Gymnastics coach Kim Hughes honored

Sac State head coach Kim Hughes brought his Hornet gymnasts into the West Regionals last Saturday looking to justify recognition for his team, but what he did not expect was recognition from his peers.

Hughes was selected Region I Coach of the Year at the NCAA West Regional coaches meeting by 12 Regional coaches.

“There is no greater achievement in the world than to be recognized by your peers,” Hughes said. “This has been a great year for me but this definitely tops it all off. It’s tremendous.”

Hughes has been coaching at Sac State for 18 years and has guided Sac State to a 21-4 record this season. This year the program earned its first invitation to NCAA postseason competition in the West Regionals.

“In the past we have been very competitive at the Division I and II levels by almost going undefeated,” he said. “But to finish 21-4 on the highest level against Division I teams is just very exciting.”
