Early Hornet Milestones

April 27, 1949 – First newsprint issue of the Hornet

September 30, 1949 – Sacramento State College begins first graduate program with a Master of Arts

October 7, 1949 – Board of Regents requires all professors to sign an affidavit stating that they are not communists.

December 8, 1950 – The Hornet runs advertisements for Personal Geiger Counters.

March 3, 1950 – Esther Williams roots for the first Sacramento State College athletic teams.

October 25, 1952 – President Guy West lays the cornerstone for the future home of Sacramento State College.

February 13, 1959 – Political Geography becomes the first Sacramento State College course to be broadcast over television.

September 23, 1969 – ASI begins a student crisis hotline.

October 28, 1969 – National leaders of the Black Panthers speak on campus.

November 4, 1969 – Sacramento State students become the first in the state to vote an increase in fees to cover student activities.
