The State Hornet received five awards from the California Intercollegiate Press Association 1999 competition. The competition judges entries from college newspapers throughout the state. Entries were limited to issues and articles published in 1998.

Among weekly newspapers, the Hornet won first place for this Web site, State Hornet Online, and second place in overall design for the spring 1998 CSUS 50th anniversary edition.

Three Hornet staff members were also recognized for their work. Jennifer Baldwin, co-news editor for spring 1998, received a first place for her story on the Suzanne Brooks trial last spring.

Baldwin and Jeff Harrelson, co-news editor for spring 1998, received a third-place award for their front-page news design and layout.

John Montgomery, the current editor in chief, received an honorable mention in the opinion column category.
