Scholarships abound in new officeOne-stop shopping for free money begins in Lassen HallBy Teresa MatrangaState Hornet Published May 5, 1999 Ten years ago students had to search through books in the Library and stand in the never-ending lines at the Financial Aid office to get a scholarship. Last July, however, a scholarship office opened in Lassen Hall that makes it easier for students to locate information that could pay for their college education. The whole scholarship effort needed broader visibility, said Eric Gravenberg, the associate vice president of Student Affairs and the person who spearheaded the effort for the new financial aid extension, The university is interested in trying to get more scholarships for CSUS, said Gravenberg when asked why he pushed to create the scholarship office. Students now have immediate access to financial aid data at the new office in Lassen Hall, room 1013. Binders full of scholarships fill two bookcases, and a bulletin board just inside the office displays numerous scholarship offers. Students can ask how to apply for scholarships, pick up applications, and find out how to contact sponsors efficiently without hanging on the telephone or standing in long lines. The scholarship office staff is available to answer questions and provide support for students who have problems processing or receiving checks. The new location gives easy access for both current and prospective students, said Gravenberg. All the scholarship information students need can be found in the satellite office or on its Web page (http://www.csus.edu). There is also a fact sheet available. If they are enterprising, they can go to college free, said Clemons. The scholarship office hours are from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. The telephone number is 278-6931.
