Scramble

Students can determine which classes they won’t get a year from now with the release of the all new annual class schedule. Yes, the newfangled schedule lists classes for the next two semesters and is now posted online at the CSUS homepage. Print copies are due at the Hornet Bookstore on May 10. Will they cost twice as much?

Snowballing

The number of academic departments on campus who have refused to form merit pay review committees as a protest against the imposed faculty contract has risen to 23 out of 47.

We won!

The competition was tough, the fight was fierce. But the State Hornet, now in its 50th year, took home five awards, including best Web site in the state, from the California Intercollegiate Press Association. The Hornet also won first place for a news story, second place for overall design, third place for front-page design and an honorable mention for John Montgomery’s opinion column, The Soapbox.

Now, we may be able to kick some statewide butt in the college newspaper business, but playing softball is another matter entirely.

The State Hornet fell victim on Sunday to the campus-life folks at ASI in the second annual Hornet vs. ASI softball game. In keeping with our journalistic integrity and pesky habit of printing the truth, we must admit that we didn’t just lose; we got clobbered, 22-15. The Hornet will humbly present the much-coveted turkey trophy to the ASI Board of Directors at today’s meeting. It’s just too bad that only two sitting board members even bothered to show up to the game. See you next year!

Your move

Speaking of ASI board members who seemed to have fallen out of the habit of showing up for events, only two members bothered to attend both days of the California Higher Education Student Summit last weekend. Why should we care? Because ASI cut ten $100 checks drawn from student fees for the 10 members to attend. Memo to indolent student representatives: We won’t waste your time if you won’t waste our money.

Fast Fact:
More than 12,000 CSUS students recieve some form of financial aid.
