Campus must be environment where all students are welcomeI am writing today to discuss the most serious topic I have ever discussed in these pages, that being the bomb/death aimed at five Black men and the Ethnic Studies Department. The day after the bombing an African-American friend of mine came up to me and asked me if I had heard about the threat. He was visibly shaken and afraid, he then took me by the arm and I said to him that if he was going to die, I wanted to die right beside him. WE MUST stand together and protect each other. An attack on one of us, is an attack on all of us. This University must protect its students, staff, and faculty. It must also create an environment where all students feel welcome and are respected. We need to work to expand Ethnic and Womens Studies and ensure that every student is required to learn about the different cultures on our campus and that they have an understanding that will lead to mutual respect. To this end, I want to strongly encourage all students to get involved in their student government. We take $97 of your dollars and you deserve the right to have a say in where it is spent. Come to the 3rd floor of the union or call us at 278-6784 and find out what services and programs we have for each of you. We want you to get involved and help us increase the amount of student POWER on this campus. I can be reached at 402-9741. Thank you. Sean C. South Rec Center vote? Never againWell, for once CSU Apathy (our nick name amongst other universities, or so Ive been told) didnt live up to its name.Apparently, one thing students at Sac State are not apathetic about is the proposed Rec Center. And I, for one, have never been more proud of my university. For the second time in a year, loud and clear, we have voiced our adamant NO! to our administration and to the ASI powers that be. Not only did the voting population double from Fall 1998 to Fall of 1999 on the referendum, but the voting percentage was double against the Rec Center Referendum (Hornet, Dec.1, 1999). Geoff Sakala was quoted as stating that maybe it was the increase in semester fees by approximately $100 that did the referendum in. You think, Geoff? Could it be? Do you think that the first time we voted it down in April we were just kidding? An April Fools joke perhaps? Or could it possibly be (indulge me for a minute Pres. Sakala and ex-president Davis) that in an initial survey of Sac State students, only 10% of the student population used a recreational facility within a 10 mile radius of Sac State (Hornet, April 7, 1999). That would mean, (stay with me fellas) that over half of us still voted against the rec center because it would benefit only 10% of the population here at CSUS while increasing the fees of 100% of the population. $50,000 well spent on a survey that raised awareness of this project confirming what we already knew that we DO NOT WANT A REC CENTER. In fact, I could conduct a survey on how students feel about spending $50,000+ on worthless surveys, guys, for under $150 in fact Id do it for free if we could lay to rest the rec center issue. Carol Ackerson and Geoff Sakala both take the Terminator stance (Ill be back) in reference to the rec center. I am not so sophisticated, and therefore I am taking the Dr. Seuss stance in order to get my point across regarding the rec center once and for all:
