New Student Housing Project

Why is campus building a new residence hall?

This construction project is directly in line with Student Affairs and Housing goals as well as President Gonzalez’s Destination 2010 Plan.  An expanded Residential Life program will help us bring to fruition goals of:

  • Creating a more vibrant student life program
  • Building a dynamic physical plant
  • Offering co-curricular programs that increase retention rates and shorten time to degree.

How we got to where we are today...

Market Demand Study

July 2005 Sac State retained the services of Anderson Strickler, LLC, a national consulting firm, to conduct a comprehensive study of the student demand for, and financial feasibility of, expanding on-campus student housing.

Market demand assessment included:

  • Student focus groups
  • WEB based survey of students
  • WEB based survey of parents
  • Review of housing opportunities near campus

The study indicated an unmet current need for an additional 2,600 beds of affordable on campus housing.

Based on the Market Demand Study, the campus Student Housing Advisory Committee (SHAC) recommended to Dr. Gonzalez that the number of students living on or very near campus be increased in phases:

Phase 1: add 603 beds, student suite style apartments, opening in fall 2009

Phase 2: undertake phased modernization of existing residence halls

Phase 3: add 560 or more beds, suite and/or apartment mix, fall 2012

Phase 4: add new beds in phases between 2015 and 2021 to reach a total of    2600 beds for students on campus.

President Gonzalez authorized Phase 1, to be presented for CSU Housing Proposal Review Committee and Trustee consideration in 2006-07.

In August 2006, MVE Institutional was retained as the Executive Architect to develop bridging schematics and documents for Design/Build RFP.

On December 2006, the campus submittal to Housing Proposal Review Committee was forwarded.  The proposal was then approved in early January, 2007.

Schematics and Financing for student housing project were approved by Trustees during the May 2007 Board meeting.
