CSU-Paid Life Insurance

The CSU offers employer-paid basic term Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance to eligible employees:

  • CSUEU (Units 2, 5, 7 and 9): $10,000 basic life/$10,000 AD&D policy
  • Public Safety (Unit 8): $10,000 basic life/$10,000 AD&D policy
  • Faculty (Unit 3): $50,000 basic life/$50,000 AD&D policy
  • Academic Support (Unit 4): $25, 000 basic life/$25,000 AD&D policy
  • Physicians (Unit 1): $25, 000 basic life/$25,000 AD&D policy
  • Confidential: $50,000 basic term life/$50,000 AD&D policy
  • Management Personnel Plan: $100,000 basic term life/$100,000 AD&D policy
  • Executive: $250,000 basic term life/$250,000 AD&D policy

The insurance is underwritten by Standard Insurance Company:

  • CSU pays the entire premium.
  • First $50,000 is tax-free.
  • MPP employees and Executives who do not want the additional tax liability may irrevocably waive the extra insurance for the remainder of their CSU employment.
  • Life insurance over $50,000 will have income tax impact on employee based on amount over $50,000 and employee's age.

The Standard’s basic term life and AD&D insurance plan contains a number of enhanced coverage features including:

  1. Waiver of premium for disabled employees
  2. Limited portability,
  3. Living death benefit, and
  4. Medex Travel Assist.

Medex Travel Assist - is the newest feature of the CSU basic term life insurance coverage. It was designed to provide important resources, including evacuation services, arrangement of medical and/or legal care while traveling.

Voluntary Life Insurance

The CSU offers eligible employees the option to purchase additional, employee paid life insurance through The Standard. Employees can purchase voluntary insurance for themselves, a spouse or domestic partner, or dependent children. 

  • Employee coverage ranges from a minimum of $10,000 to a maximum of $1,500,000.
  • Coverage for an employee's spouse or domestic partner ranges from a minimum of $10,000 to a maximum of $750,000.
  • Coverage for children can be purchased at $5,000, $10,000 and $20,000. Children must be insured for the same amount.
  • New employees qualify for Guarantee Issue coverage if coverage is applied for within 60 days of start of employment. Under the Guarantee Issue provision, employees may apply for coverage up to $150,000 for themselves, $50,000 for their spouse or domestic partner, and $20,000 for each child without answering medical questions (evidence of insurability).
  • However, any amount, up to the maximum limits, may be chosen and would require evidence of insurability.
  • The Standard's voluntary life insurance plan also contains a number of enhanced coverage features including:
    • Waiver of premium for disabled employees
    • Portability
    • Coverage not subject to reduction because of age, and
    • Living death benefit
