The investment in Sacramento State made by the state and private donors
is paying big dividends in the Capital Region. Sacramento State
activities generate $743.5 million and add 15,946 jobs for the
region’s economy.
Operations of the campus, its auxiliary organizations including the
Sacramento State Foundation, Capital Public Radio and the University
Union, campus-related student spending, and campus construction amount
to $438.8 million a year. That includes instruction, student services
and facilities management, as well as $24 million in sponsored research
activities. Much of that is the salaries of people who live in the region,
which means a large proportion of it is spent locally.

Spending
by 28,500 Sacramento State students also has a large impact. Students
who live off-campus away from parents spend an estimated $15,650
a year on tuition, school supplies, rent and transportation. The
University’s 750 international
students each spend an estimated $18,000 every year. Sacramento State
tuition is just $2,500 a year for 2003-04, so a great deal of student
spending goes directly into the local economy. And because half of
Sacramento State students are assisted through $102 million in financial
aid each year, a good portion of their spending is money brought
into the region from state and federal sources.
