Mandibular region &
Infratempotal fossa
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this laboratory you should know:
1. The parts of the mandible and their functional significance.
2. The position, orientation, attachments, function and innervation of the muscles of mastication.
3. The origin, course, functional components and distribution of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve.
4. The boundaries of the infratemporal fossa and the position, names and contents of the foramina and other openings associated with the fossa.
5. The distribution of the major branches of the external carotid with special attention on the maxillary artery
PRELAB PREPARATION
1. Read the portions of your textbook on the mandible, temporomandibular joint and infratemporal fossa (976-987;) and pterygopalatine fossa (pp. 1010-1013). Study diagrams of the origin, course and distribution of the major branches of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve (pp. 1139-1142).
2. Study the origin, course and distribution of the SVA (taste) fibers of VII that are distributed with the lingual branch of V and the GVE (parasympathetic) fibers of VII and IX that are associated with the lingual and auriculotemporal nerves.
