corpora cavernosa are surrounded by a dense, non elastic tunica albuginea.

During
erection, the corpora cavernosa swell. The non eleastic tunica stretches until
it is taut. Continued increase in blood
pressure makes the penis rigid.
Expansion
also compresses deep dorsal veins against the deep fascia to restrict blood
drainage.
