Simulated Moving Bed Homework

1. What are some advantages of using SMB?
+ Continuous separation
+ Uses less solvent (recycled within column)
+ Can separate chiral molecules more efficiently

2. What are some disadvantages of using SMB?
- Complex equipment
- Optimal for binary samples

3. What is a "true moving bed model" and why do we have to use the simulated moving bed?
In true moving bed, the stationary phase moves counter current of the mobile phase. Moving the stationary phase is not practical, therefore simulated moving bed is an alternative process that rotates the inlet/outlet valves to simulate the moving process .

4. What is the minimum amount of zones required for a simulated moving bed system?
Four
