Additional Problem 3.1

A student wants to prepare a buffer from solid Tris hydrochloride (tris = tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane = (HOCH2)3CNH2 and the hydrochloride indicates that it is present in BH+Cl- form where B is the base, (HOCH2)3CNH2). It is desired to prepare 1.00 L of buffer with a solution ionic strength of 0.050 M and pH of 7.85 and the student has 1.00 M solutions of NaOH and HCl to use in the buffer preparation.  Using the K listed in Appendix G, determine:

a) the mass of the buffer to weigh out

b) whether to add NaOH or HCl

c) the volume of the 1.00 M solutions of NaOH and HCl to add

Ignore activity in performing the calculations
