Formal Journal

The term "formal" means that everything you do in the journal should be typed and revised to ensure clarity. The word "journal," on the other hand, indicates that the writing done here is more reflective than for a paper proving a particular point; and that you will not be penalized for grammatical errors. I encourage you, in fact, to write informal entries and sketches as part of this journal; you may even wish to show these to me from time to time, but such informal writing is not required and will not be graded.

In the formal journal you will explore connections between things that interest you in the readings and a daily practice you create for yourself; thus the daily practice is the foundation for all of your written reflections.
