Off Campus Activities --> Timeline

The off campus activities for this course are designed to get you to experience first hand the people involved in food-related practices and reflection studied in class. During the first half of the semester, you will visit a local worship site to observe a ritual that features food in some way and to interview a participant. During the second half, you will visit a farm stand or farmer's market to purchase food for one or more meals, interview the farmer or farm staff, and observe your own communal or solitary eating. (You will sign up for both visits on the course content page in SacCT.) These two experiences will serve as the foundation for the two observation reports: the Worship Report and the Food Culture Report.

IMPORTANT:

  • For the Worship Report, you must observe formal worship at one of the times listed under Local Sites, not simply visit the site and talk to people.

  • For the Food Culture Report, *choose a farmer's market or stand that sells food grown within 100 miles of your home.*

  • In both cases, I strongly recommend that you go with at least one classmate, family member or friend. Though the people in charge of these sites are always welcoming, you should take the same precautions as in any other public place.

Timeline

You will need to choose

  • your worship site by Wednesday, September 19 and
  • your farmer's market or farm stand by Wednesday, October 31

by indicating your choice on the sign-up sheet linked from the course content page in SacCT.

CAUTION: you should choose a local place of worship and a farmer's market or stand

  • that you have NOT previously visited yourself and OR known much about from friends or family.

  • that is reasonably accessible; see me if you have problems with transportation or commute from a distance.

  • whose days & hours match your schedule; **call ahead** to verify.

Once you choose your sites, make sure you

  • know where you are going so that you can get there on time.

  • print out the appropriate worksheet

  • use the appropriate worksheet to start generating questions that you will attempt to answer when you go.

I also recommend that you read my further advice about observing and interviewing people that you meet.

Following your visits

  • your WVW must be posted under the Assignments tab in SacCT by Saturday, September 29,
AND a *printed copy* must be brought to class on Monday, October 1.

  • you must hold your MEAL(s) and complete your FCW in time to
post it under the Assignments tab in SacCT by Monday, November 12,
AND a *printed copy* must be brought to class on Wednesday, November 14.

See the schedule to confirm these dates and also to see when to submit the final product for both assignments.
