A web-enhanced class

For this class we have specific meeting times when students are required to be in attendance in class

About 50% of course materials and activities are delivered online. Students are required to be in class about 50% of normal in-class time.

Schedule (Section 1 - Monday/Wednesday Class)

Mondays (Jan 28 thru May 12) Fren 120 meets 5:30-6:45 pm in MRP 2030

Students may arrive early for extra-curricular slide shows, excerpts from films, and music connected with that day's in-class work.

Schedule (Section 2 - Tuesday/Thursday Class)

Tuesdays (Jan 29 thru May 13)) Fren 120 meets 10:30-11:45 am in MRP 2030

Students may arrive early for extra-curricular slide shows, excerpts from films, and music connected with that day's in-class work. The rest of the work is done on-line.

Outside of class: Students work individually using materials and assignments that are online.

Tips and Cautions on Taking a Web-Enhanced Course

Web-Enhanced classes are similar to 'regular' classes. Both require reading and studying outside the classroom - the standard is two to three hours per week per credit hour.

Given that this is a three credit hour class, you should count on doing 6-9 hours of work per week (After the first two weeks, you will have 75 minutes in class and the rest at home).

The major difference between web-enhanced classes and 'regular classes' is more responibility.

Students, take on more responsibility because it is up to them to put in the online class time when they want to fit it in their schedule. Some say that classes with a web-based component are harder on you.

You have to guide yourself with your time management to get work done on time.

It's easy to put things off for another day; the lack of face-to-face contact with the professor means that you have to push yourself. You have to study often on your own, since it is not easyto coordinate your schedule with those of fellow students.

How do you circumvent these obstacles?

Make sure you regularly check the class WebCT website to keep up with changes. This is your responsibility. Use email to ask the professor questions if you are unsure of what is required.

Don't wait! Don't hesitate to ask!

Plan your time to make sure that you are ahead of assignment deadlines.

Do not to wait until the last minute. Things can go wrong!

Use the class web site and email to keep in contact with the professor.

What to expect

This class is a mix of in-class and on-line contact between students and professor. The use of the Internet, web sites, and email to facilitate the class means that each of us has more opportunity to organize our time according to our individual schedules.

Drawback

This puts responsibility on our shoulders to keep up and complete the tasks on time.

There are four types of out-of-class assessments

All assignments are due on the due date Late and untidy work will be penalized at least one grade point (a late B+ would become a B for instance)

Reading

As well as the textbook, there are articles or on-line work put together by the professor and accessed from our WebCT site. Readings from the Web pages or from handouts are accompanied by questionnaires to guide students to the major points of the reading. Answer your questionnaire with legible and complete full sentences.

Writing

All writing assignments are indicated by the word "writing" in the schedule of assignments. Written assignments are to be written in clear, legible handwriting or typed (using a word-processing program to write your assignments is preferable since you will be able to correct them easier for rewrites). Students are expected to write in full sentences with good grammar. Points will be taken off for grammar, syntax, and punctuation problems. However, students will have the opportunity to rewrite any piece of work for an upgrade. The upgrade will be based on the average of the original work and its rewrite.

Online Discussion

All discussion assignments are on-line at the WebCT site; all discussion assignments are indicated by the word "discussion" in the schedule of assignments. Students will be put in discussion groups for this part of the course. Students can do the discussion at their convenience, but they must do it before the deadline on the schedule. Late work will be penalized.

The discussion instructions should be read carefully.

The discussions are in two parts:

1. an initial response to the question(s) posed by the professor
2. a response to responses by other students in the group

Failure to respond to comments by other students will be regarded as incomplete work.

On-Line Quizzes

On-line quizzes are at the WebCt site and based on reading of the class text. WebCT quizzes based on reading must be done by the deadline date. Students have two opportunities to do each test. The better of the two results counts for the grade for this section.
