Summary:  A parade of animals arrives at an elegant building where an elephant operates the elevator.  But they can’t all rush into the elevator at once.  It carries only the weight of a single elephant.  As the children watch each group of excited animals being weighed and find out where they are going in such a hurry, they can learn the basic underlying skills of measurement.

This book links a potential teen-hero with mathematical concepts that make the reader look “between the lines” for the real message of the story.

Summary:  An animated public television series that is designed to help students learn mathematics.  Produced in cooperation with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.  In Episode #2, the Monsters decide to build an addition on to their castle, but must let the carpenters know how big they wish the new room to be.  The Monsters progress from describing a room that is “sort of long” to pacing it out and figuring out the number of steps.

      Purpose and Value:  An African boy wants to make his own galimoto, or “toy vehicle,” but has no material to make it with.  This resourceful young boy finds bits and lengths of wire as he wanders through his village to make his galimoto with.  This engaging book, explored by Levar Burton, combines art, mathematics, and social studies. Students learn about life in an African village and the inventiveness of a young boy who collects and measures lengths of wire in order to make his toy.
