            This book is designed especially for the sixth grade but can be used by younger people seeking a higher level of knowledge about Geography.  Pages 98-103 specifically focus on different types of regions.  It tells about why we need to distinguish different regions and the characteristics of the different regions.  This book is full of facts and activities that can be used to teach about different regions across the world.  The third grade social studies standards that this book addresses are: 3.1.1, and 3.5.1.  This book can be found at Barnes and Noble.

 

…..If You Lived With A Cherokee. 1998. Written by Peter and Connie Roop.  Illustrated by Kevin Smith. New York: Scholastic.

            This is a story that tells about what it is like to be a Cherokee Indian.  It tells the story of what types of food they eat, how they cook, how they dress, marry, and how they all belong to a community.  This fictional story portrays what it is like to belong in a community of people because they all have the same values, etc.  This story would be suitable for grades 2nd through 6th.  The third grade social studies standards that this would meet are: 3.2.1, 3.2.2, 3.2.4, and 3.5.1.  This fictional picture book can be found at Barnes and Noble.

 

Give Me Liberty! The Story of the Declaration of Independence. 2000. Written by Russell Freedman. New York: Holiday House.

            An awesome story about the Declaration of Independence.  In this powerful story the reader will get an understanding of the place of a woman, servants, and African-American slaves during this particular time period.  This picture book is appropriate for ages 9-12.  The third grade standards that this picture book would meet are: 3.4.1, 3.4.2, and 3.4.3.  This book can be found at Barnes and Noble.

 

Teddy Roosevelt: Young Rough Rider. 1989. Written by Edd Winfield Parks.  Illustrated by Gray Morrow.  U.S.A.: First Aladdin Paperbacks.

            The life and history of Teddy Roosevelt is told in a fictional biography.  Students will learn about the events and characteristics that he is so well-known for, especially how he was involved in United States history as a politician. Most appropriate for grades 3-7. This book would meet these third grade social studies standards: 3.4.6.  It can be found at Barnes and Noble.

 

It Happened In The White House: Extraordinary Tales From America’s Most Famous Home.  2000. Written by Kathleen Karr.  Illustrated by Paul Meisel. NewYork: Hyperion books for children.

            Full of funny, true facts about the white house and the politicians that have lived and spent time in it.  This book of short stories will have students interested and excited to learn about America’s most famous house and politicians. The third grade social studies standards that this book meets are: 3.4.2, 3.4.3, 3.4.4, and 3.4.6.  This book can be found at Barnes and Noble.

 

The Gettysburg Address. 1995.  Written by Abraham Lincoln, and foreword by Garry Wills.  Illustrated by Michael McCurdy. Boston. Houghton-Mifflin Company.

            This is a picture book using the speech that President Lincoln gave in Gettysburg during the Civil War as the story to go with the pictures throughout the book.  This book contains fabulous black and white pictures that portray the emotion of all types of people during this war.  The words accompany the pictures to give us the sense of what the speech was written for.  Most suited for grades 2-7. The third grade social studies standards that this book fulfills are: 3.4.3, and 3.4.6.  This book can be found at Barnes and Noble.

 

Our Country’s Presidents.  2001. Written by Ann Bausum. Washington D.C.:  National Geographic Society.

            This biographical book has presidential profiles from George Washington to George W. Bush.  It contains full page official portraits of all the U.S. presidents with their signatures.  It also contains famous quotes, speeches, documents and writings.  Each individual presidential profile contains personal information such as: their interests, or family photos.  Most appropriate for grades 3 and up. The third grade standards that this book meets are: 3.4.3 and 3.4.6. It can be found at Barnes and Noble.

 

This Land is Your Land: Songs of Unity.

            This CD is a collaborative project that includes work by different bands and poets.  This CD was made as a tribute to liberty and justice.  It includes songs, stories, and poetry to create and educational experience about community, and unity of all types of people in America.  This CD is appropriate for grades 1-6.  It meets the following third grade social studies standards: 3.3.1, 3.4.2, and 3.4.6.  This CD can be found at Borders books.

 

Disney’s Yankee Doodle Mickey.  2002. Walt Disney.

            This CD includes ten songs about our land, country, and flag.  It includes songs such as: Star Spangled Banner, and Yankee Doodle.  It is a perfect CD to play in a classroom when trying to promote loyal, patriotic, citizens.  The third grade social studies standards that this CD would meet are: 3.4.1, 3.4.2, 3.4.3, and 3.4.6.  This CD can be found at Borders books. 

 

Random House Book of Poetry for Children. 1983. Illustrated by Arnold Lobel. 

            This is a children’s book of poetry about many different things.  On pg. 37 there are two poems.  One poem is about a picture of Martin Luther King, and how it inspires a young girl to overcome some of her problems. The second poem is about the humbleness and strong will of Abraham Lincoln.  These poems are appropriate for grades 2-7.  These poems would meet the following third grade social studies standards: 3.4.2, and 3.4.6.  It can be found at Borders books.
