Controversial Issues in Child Development

Note: Reponses to these questions should be word processed, not handwritten. Discussion assignments must be turned during the class that the issue is discussed. No late assignments will be accepted. Partial credit may be assigned for attendance at discussion sessions without completion of the discussion assignment.

Use the readings on parenting and discipline to respond to the following guiding and reflection questions.

1) Hicks-Pass conducted an analysis of several studies on the link between corporal punishment and children's outcomes. What did she find? What are the limitations of the studies she reviews? 

2) Boutwell et al. state that there is still a lot of variability in children's response to spanking and that the relationship may not be causal. What do Boutwell et al. say may be happening to explain why some children do not develop difficulties and others do not? What evidence do they provide for this explanation?

3)  What position does Fritz take that about banning or outlawing spanking? Can you make an argument against his position?

4) Several of the authors argue that important distinctions need to be made in the discussion of corporal or physical punishment - between physical punishment and child abuse, between ordinary and extraordinary punishment, between parent and school-based physical punishment. Why is it important to make these distinctions? What other distinctions would you like to make in evaluating the effects of physical punishment?

5) What are the policy implications of the research on spanking? What future research needs to be conducted?

6) What is your position on the issue of whether physical punishment should be banned? Provide support from the readings for your position.
