Use the readings on child care to respond to the following guiding and reflection questions.

1) Describe 3 important findings revealed in Jacob's (2009) review of the literature on child care effects. Was there anything that surprised you - or that you think contradicts your view of the effects of child care on children's development?

2) What (a) criticisms and (b) suggestions for future research does Jacob make?

3) What is the main purpose of the Adi-Japha et al. (2009) study? Why might it be important to consider whether parenting quality has different effects on children's cognitive development depending on the amount of nonmaternal care that children experience?

4) What is the main finding of the Adi-Japha study? What explanations are offered for this surprising finding?

5) Consider the measures used in the NICHD study data set. Do you think they are good measures? Why or why not?

6) What are some implications for policy suggested by the research presented here?

7) Given what you have read, what position do you take on the question of whether non maternal child care is harmful to children? Support your answer.
