Response Papers/Practice Essays

Short response papers and other written assignments are due throughout the semester. descriptions for each assignment are listed below and linked to the course schedule. See the course schedule for due dates.

Response Paper 1 - The Effective Essay 

In a 3-4 page (formal) essay, address the following topic. Your paper should be written in APA style (e.g., double-spaced, 12-point Roman font, 1-inch margins with page numbers on upper right). You should reference your readings to support your ideas .

Discuss the elements of an effective essay. What techniques can you employ to write an effective scholarly essay? What role does critical reading and thinking play in effective scholarly writing?

 

 

Response Paper 2 - The Focal Topic 

In a 3-4 page (formal) essay, address the following issues and questions. Your paper should be written in APA style (e.g., double-spaced, 12-point Roman font, 1-inch margins with page numbers on upper right).

Discuss the concerns and questions you have as you begin the process of preparing for the exam. What do you hope you will gain from this experience? What strengths and weakness do you think you will bring to the task?  What difficulties and challenges do you think you will need to overcome and how do you hope to overcome them. In the first step of the exam process, you will need to investigate a focal topic. Describe some ideas you have for  your focal topic. What interests you and why?

 

 

Response Paper 3 - Revising and Editing

Revise one of the two response papers. Next, write a description of three main errors you corrected in your paper and describe how you will check for them in the exam. Attach the earlier draft to the revised version. Of what importance is revision in this exam process and how can you ensure that your essays are polished and clear even in the exam situation?

 

 

Practice Essay #1 - Theory

Using your readings for part one of the reading list, address the following practice exam question in a 4-5 page formal essay (For now, use the readings as you would in writing any class paper. We will practice a timed question issues and questions). Your paper should be written using APA style (e.g., double-spaced, 12-point Roman font, 1-inch margins with page numbers on upper right).

      Discuss the conceptualization of "environment" in three different theoretical approaches: (a) Social Learning theory, (b) Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, and (c) Bronfenbrenner's Bioecological theory. Use examples from the literature to illustrate these differing views of environmental influence, and their utility in the study of development.  

 

Practice Essay #2 - Method

Using your readings for part one of the reading list, address the following practice exam question in a 4-5 page formal essay (For now, use the readings as you would in writing any class paper).  Your paper should be written using APA style (e.g., double-spaced, 12-point Roman font, 1-inch margins with page numbers on upper right).

Design a study to address a research question related to one of the following: (a) reading/literacy development, or (c) effective classroom practices. Use the research literature to justify your question, design a study to address the question, and discuss the limitations inherent in your study, including issues related to internal validity, ethics, measurement, and generalizability.

 

Practice Essay #3-  Context

Using your readings for part one of the reading list, address the following practice exam question in a 4-5 page formal essay (For now, use the readings as you would in writing any class paper). Your paper should be written using APA style (e.g., double-spaced, 12-point Roman font, 1-inch margins with page numbers on upper right).

Use Bronfenbrenner’s Bioecological Model to discuss contextual influences on development within both of your chosen context areas, focusing on a specific area of development. Provide research examples that support this model for your chosen area of development.
