Applications for the Fall semester will be accepted in the Spring and Summer of 2000 on a space-available basis. Some flexibility will be allowed because of the late nature of the program announcement, but preference for funding will be given to early applicants. Applications will not be reviewed until all parts of the application have been received. Get an
application packet: You will need an application packet to get started. Application to the graduate program at CSU Sacramento is available at: http://www.csus.edu/rgs/gradstud/gradctr.html The main application, transcripts and fees will be processed by the Graduate School (Office of Research and Graduate Studies). Send the following information directly to the graduate school
Select an
advisor: Each incoming student must be accepted by an advisor before admission to the program. This requirement is necessary to avoid overloading the more popular specialties. We highly recommend that you make early contact with potential advisors to see whether they are taking new students and are willing to supervise projects in your area of interest. Contact can be through E-mail, letters, telephone conversations or visits to the CSUS campus. Applications may be submitted while a student is in the process of selecting an advisor, but students will not be accepted to the program until they have been accepted by an advisor. Provide
letters of recommendation: Your application will include confidential letters of recommendation from three people who are familiar with your ability or work. At least two of these letters should discuss academic ability and potential to succeed in a University environment. Letters of recommendation should be submitted directly to the Geology Department in signed, sealed envelopes by the person providing the recommendation. Letters of recommendation should be mailed to the following address: Geology Department, Placer Hall Write a brief
statement of interest: Your application must include a statement of research interests, career goals and background information to help with the selection process. In addition to your statement about proposed research interests, you may wish to discuss work experience and whether your undergraduate grades are representative of your academic ability. This should be forwarded to the Geology Department (see address above) and will be added to your application file. Send
information to the Geology
Department: The Geology Department's Graduate Committee will review all applications. Please send the following information directly to the Geology Department:
Deadlines: The normal application deadline for the Fall Semester will be March 1st. Due the late nature of this program announcement, applications will be accepted through the late Spring and early Summer on a space-available basis. Apply before June 16 to avoid late fees. Applicants who are applying for assistantships are strongly urged to apply early. GRE
scores: The GRE is no longer required for acceptance to the program. Students who feel that their transcripts or grade point average do not reflect their over-all academic ability or knowledge of geology may still take the GRE and report their scores as part of the application process.
