Week 5: Aquifers and aquitards, transmissivity and storativity in confined and unconfined aquifer systems

Objectives:

Upon completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • Distinguish between an aquifer, an aquitard and an aquifuge.

  • Discuss the difference between storativity in a confined aquifer and storativity in an unconfined aquifer.

  • Define and calculate transmissivity and storativity

  • Discuss the difference between hydraulic conductivity and transmissivity in confined and unconfined aquifers.

  • Calculate transmissivity in complex units with multiple layers.

  • Calculate storativity in unconfined and confined aquifers.

  • Give appropriate range of values for storativity in unconfined and confined aquifers.

  • Discuss homogeneity, heterogeneity and isotropy in aquifers.

  • Calculate total hydraulic head, including problems with variable density
