Objectives

Upon completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • Describe the slope and composition of the continental shelf, continental slope, continental rise and ocean trench.

  • Describe how new crust is formed at the mid-oceanic ridge.

  • Describe how the magnetic patterns of ocean crust can be used to date the crust.

  • Summarize age patterns in ocean crust.

  • Describe how guyotes, seamounts, barrier reefs and atolls form.
