Week 2: Minerals

Objectives

Upon completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • List the main groups of minerals, and describe the chemical makeup of each

  • List the properties that a geologist would use to identify a mineral: streak, specific gravity, luster, hardness, crystal form, color, chemical makeup, magnetism, effervescence

  • Be prepared to identify these properties in mineral specimens during class.
