Employment
Job growth in Butte County continued positive in 2008 with an 0.94% (700 job) increase. The forecast for 2009, based on actual data through December, 2008, is for a 0.7% (600 job) decline.

Unemployment
The annual average Unemployment Rate for 2008 was 8.4%, up from the 2007 rate of 6.7%. The forecast for 2009, based on actual data through December, 2008, is for another increase to 8.8%.

Taxable Sales
Taxable Sales for all Outlets, declined at a -1.7% rate in 2007, down from the 5.5% increase in 2006. The forecast for 2008, based on actual results through the 4th quarter, 2007, is for a smaller 0.5% decrease, followed by a similar 0.8% decrease in 2009.

Building Permits
Residential Building Permits activity in 2008 declined by another 37.3%, or 324 fewer permits issued than in 2007. There were 544 residential building permits issued in 2008, so the building activity does continue. The forecast for 2009, based on actual data through December, 2008, is for a small increase of 3.9% to 565 residential permits for the year. The forecast for 2009 is a change from the bad news of the last several years.
