Professional Activities

Work Experience:

1962-1968: National Biscuit Company (NABISCO), position-Operations Supervisor.

I started at NABISCO's Sacramento Sales Branch as a General Clerk in October, 1962, and spent three years learning the distribution operation. I was promoted to the position of Operations Supervisor in October, 1965, and held that position until I left in May of 1968 to continue my education. As Operations Supervisor, I was responsible for the operation of the office, warehouse and delivery fleet, including the supervision of 22 employees. In addition, I served as assistant to the Branch Manager and dealt with all aspects of the sales operations, including sales management, labor negotiations, and sales meetings and training.

Research Projects

Funded Research Projects:

Sacramento Forecast Project:
Beginning in July, 1994, in conjunction with RELUI, the development of a regional economic and business data collection and forecasting center. The goal of this enterprise is to provide for the collection of timely monthly and quarterly data for activities in the Sacramento Region and the reporting of the same to interested parties and the public. Part I of this project involved the establishment of EXCEL databases for the various entities covered by or impacting on the Sacramento Region. Part II, beginning in October, 1994, was the semi-annual dissemination of the current and forecasted values to interested parties in the Sacramento Region.

An Internet page was established on the CSU,S server in July, 1996, to broaden the exposure of the project's publications. The web page includes forecasts, graphs and tables for each of the eleven counties in the Sacramento Economic Area, the Component Economic Areas (CEA's), the State of California, and the US. County data is primarily focused on employment and taxable sales (using the Labor Force Survey information from the State's Employment Development Department and the Taxable Sales reports from the State's Board of Equalization). The web page address for the Sacramento Forecast Project is http://www.csus.edu/indiv/j/jensena/sfp/.

The funded aspect of this project ended in July, 1995, but the Project continues as described.

History of the School of Business Administration:
As a part of the 50th Anniversary of the University, I started developing a series of web pages that chronicle the history of the School of Business Administration from 1947 (the university's beginning) to the present time. Consumer Analysis of Metropolitan Sacramento, 1948 edition:
As a part of the 50th Anniversary of the University, I started developing a series of web pages that contain the results of a survey of Sacramento area consumer buying habits in the 1947-48 era. The survey was originally done by O'Mara & Ormsbee, Inc. for the Sacramento Bee. The survey results posted to date are located at: http://www.csus.edu/indiv/j/jensena/50ago/

Course Development Projects:

Statistical Analysis System:
Developed a system of programs to do statistical analysis and forecasting on a DOS based personal computer, written in IBM-PC BASICA. The system has the ability to utilize either permanent data bases designed to be part of the system (see Data Bases for Statistical Analysis below) or data bases created by the user for the analysis of relationships pursuant to forecasting. The system includes routines for curvefitting, multiple regression, a number of smoothing techniques, and an extensive set of support and utility options. The system is the main analytical tool used in Mgmt 105 - Business Forecasting. The system was first introduced in 1985 and has undergone a number of revisions, the most recent being in 1995, which included an option for transfering data between StatGraphics and this program.

Excel Templates:
The Statistical Analysis System was replaced in the Mgmt 105 - Business Forecasting classes with Excel in the Fall Semester, 1999. Several templates were developed to supplement Excel's statistical analysis capabilities. 1. a template to perform cross-correlation (lag analysis) on two variables. 2. a template to generate the Durbin-Watson statistic for first order autocorrelation.

Data Bases for Statistical Analysis:
Established on-line data bases in 1978, used in conjunction with the Minitab Statistical Package that was then available on the PDP 11/45 computer system at CSU,S. The data bases contained both annual and quarterly national business and economic data, with the beginning date for most variables being 1947. There were 200 variables in thirteen files, updated regularly. The data bases were converted to a PC environment in 1984, and formatted to be compatible with the statistical package described above. In addition to being used by Mgmt 105 - Business Forecasting students, the data bases have been used by students in finance, marketing, real estate, and economics classes. The data is currently only quarterly data and contains values from the first quarter of 1959 to the present.

Data Bases converted to Excel format:
In conjunction with the conversion of the Statistical Analysis System to Excel, the data bases were converted from an ASCII format to the Excel format in the Fall Semester of 1999. The data bases for Mgmt 105 - Business Forecasting are currently in worksheet format (Excel 4, .xls) and include eight data worksheets, containing 180 variables.

Forecasting Model Development System:
Designed and implemented a system of BASIC programs on the PDP 11/45 computer system at CSU,S that allowed students to develop, test and utilize multiple equation, sequential solution models. The system utilizes an equation retrieval program that allows 100 different equations for forecasting national business and economic variables. The equations can be ordered in whatever sequence necessary for the solution of the model. The system was converted to a PC environment in 1984 by rewriting the programs in BASICA. The system's primary use is the generation of national business and economic forecasts in Mgmt 105 - Business Forecasting; but it has also been used to develop forecasts for building permits in Sacramento County.

Model Development System:
The Forecasting Model Development System was converted to an Access/Excel development package and implemented during the Fall semester, 1999. The package utilizes an Access data base as a library of equations and a model builder and two Excel templates, one for model testing and a second for report generation.

Sales Management Decision Simulation:
Converted a sales management decision simulation which functioned in a batch-oriented computer environment, written in FORTRAN, to the CDC 3150 time-sharing environment. The conversion enhanced the flexibility of the simulation as well as increasing the opportunity for user involvement in the operation of the simulation. The decision simulation was later translated from FORTRAN to Microsoft QuickBASIC, and adapted to the PC environment. The system currently includes 1) a decision program for student input, 2) a results program to display the results of a round of decision making, 3) a second results program that delivers a hard copy of the results, 4) a parameter program that handles the updating of the decision parameters necessary for operating the simulation, and 5) the main program that serves as the focus of the decision making and determines the results. The decision simulation serves as one of the main exercises in Mgmt 127 - Sales Management.

Bibliographic Retrieval System:
Designed and implemented a bibliographic retrieval system on the PDP 11/70 computer system at CSU,S in 1981. The retrieval system consisted of: 1) the retrieval program, 2) the maintenance and editing program, and 3) bibliographic information files for different topic areas. The topic areas originally covered were 1) general marketing literature (950 articles and 300 keywords and phrases); 2) forecasting literature (415 articles and 125 keywords and phrases); and 3) selling and sales management literature (225 books and articles and 87 keywords and phrases). The system was rewritten for the PC in 1985, using Microsoft's QuickBASIC compiler. The system was a small version of the commercially available bibliographic retrieval systems and, therefore, provided students with experience in retrieving information using these vehicles as well as aiding in their research efforts. The system was used by students in Mgmt 105 - Business Forecasting, Mgmt 127 - Sales Management, and Mgmt 122 - Consumer Behavior. The two programs were extensively revised in 1991; but have been discontinued because of the broad availability of the commercial retrieval systems and the Internet.
