Hypothesis Testing 3--Testing for Population Proportions

Hypothesis Testing 2 introduced hypothesis tests for population means.  In this page, hypothesis tests for population proportions (sometimes called population percentages) are introduced.  Tests for a single population and two populations are considered.

  • Testing H0: p=p0 vs. Ha: p<p0 where p is a population proportion or percentage

    • Assumption

      The only assumption made in testing hypotheses about population proportions is that a random sample is taken from the population.  This sample size, n, is large (in most cases it is well over 30). 

      • A random sample is taken from a population.  The population has a certain proportion of members with a certain characteristic, say brown eyes, for example.  You are going to test the null hypothesis
