Pg. 362 in the California State University, Sacramento 2000-2002 Catalog.

Personal Course Description:

Family theory and research applied to the interpretation and analysis of selected literary works on multiethnic families. Because this course takes a special look at the challenges to and strengths of ethnic minority families, it meets the requirements for the Race and Ethnicity in American Society General Education category. Because this course challenges students to look at issues that may help the student develop individually, it also meets the Personal Development (Area E) GE catergory. Because this course challenges the student to develop and utilize his or her communications skills such as writing and speaking, this is an Advanced Study course. Supplemental Prerequisites: at least one of the following: FACS 50/Soc.5; Anthro 2; Soc 3; Psych 1 (Some introduction to people class). You are responsible for meeting the requirement of a C- grade in any of the above listed social science courses.

Why Take This Course

  • Satisfies THREE GE requirements
  • Introduces the student to Family Studies
  • Focusses on families from a stressors/resiliency perspective
  • Professional communication skills building

  • Interaction with classmates through electronic discussion lists
  • Immediate access to confidential grade status online

Successful Student Charcteristics

Discipline to complete projects by deadlines; prior class experience in some entry level social/behavioral sciences field; motivation to particpate fully in class activities; and time to devote approximately 9 hours a week to a 3-credit course. Also, please be PATIENT :) This Fall 2001 class will be the first online FACS150. There are bound to be frustrations.

The most important characteristics for this class are a strong comfort level with computers and the internet. Here are important Pre-class instructions for FACS150 Online.

First, Register and determine if you are right for this class.

  • There are two ways to become a student in this class. If you are a CSUS student you may enroll in Casper. If you are not a CSUS student, but wish to take the course for academic credit, you may take it through the Open University administered by Regional and Continuing Education (RCE).

Follow this link and answer the questionnaire to see if you are truly right for this class. The sooner you determine this the better.

Understand this passing the above survey should be only the beginning. Students in this class will be expected to make basic webpages. If you do not know how to do this (or do not feel confident about learning to do this quickly on your own), then this class is not for you.

Second, do the Registration Assignment (with thanks to Craig Stanley for much of the content here)

A. Don't have a Saclink account? It is vitally important that you do. The best thing to do is to go to the third floor of Sequoia Hall, and get all the Saclink information and sign up for all you need. If you are good at computers, you can actually get this done on your own at any computer lab on campus. Once you have your saclink information/account, you will need a system to use it on such as Netscape or Explorer (I recommend Netscape). The key is that you want a system that will allow you to send attached documents.

B. Send me an E-mail, kawamotw@saclink.csus.edu, (make the subject=FACS 150). Send a small statement about why you are taking this course, the strengths you bring to the virtual class, and if you can make it to the orientation from 6-8 pm, September 3rd in the Mendocino 2007 computer lab as an attachment (no more than 100 words) . Generally speaking, work, family, or school committments are NOT appropriate reasons to miss the orientation. ESPECIALLY class conflicts. This is the ONE TIME we meet all semester. You can tell your other professor that you will be missing part or all of whatever class conflicts with our orientation.

If you decide to drop at this point, you could use this opportunity to do the courteous thing and notify me by phone (278-5339) or email. If you do not know how to get this far but still want to take the class, please call me. I am very willing to meet with you to help you along the way.

E. You will receive a confirmation via e-mail. Here's what I will do next:

  • I will contact you via e-mail and give confirmation of your commitment to attend the orientation (or a an alternative plan if you can not make it to the orientation).

F. If you do not get this assignment done, then I will assume that you:

  • have reviewed the expectations of this class, have decided that this class is not for you, and intend to drop (In this case, I can add more people.) or

have been away all break and had no way of knowing about this assignment ( In this case, there is just a little more work involved for you and me).

Third, get the required readings that are available by ordering them or going down to the bookstore. See the syllabus page for more information.
