ENGL 180Z Varieties of Ethnic Experience INTERNMENT LITERATURES. In this course, we will look at multiple representations of a critical moment in U.S. history: World War II. By interrogating the social, ethical, religious, education, political, economic, and legal implications of imprisoning U.S. citizens -- children, women, and men, we will analyze how certain bodies get marked as insiders or outsiders. We will examine how different writers understood and responded to anxieties regarding national security and national identity. We will situate Japanese internment during WWII in a broader context of US containment and relocation of different peoples of color throughout our history as a nation. Focus will be on textual analysis and cultural context. |
