Writing Assignment 1
Read "Having a Degree
and Being Educated" (pp. 121-125), and then answer the following
questions. Don't forget to cite, and be
prepared to discuss the article.
- Pellegrino says that having a college degree is
not the same thing as being educated, and illustrates his point with an
example using computers and animals.
In what ways does he say computers and animals are like students of
higher education? In what way are
they different from human students?
- Pellegrino refers to Santayana's idea that
"knowledge...is a recognition of something absent...a beginning, not
an end." In your own words,
what is the idea that Pellegrino is trying to convey about knowledge?
- Pellegrino discusses 6 ways in which you can tell
whether you have an "educated mind." What is one of these 6 ways, which you
think you developed in high school?
Give an example of using your mind in this way. What is one of these 6 ways, which you
think you are developing in your first semester of college? Give an example of how you are
developing this way of using your mind.
- Pellegrino says that "intellectual and
spiritual" freedom, which are developed by education, are part of
being "truly human."

Degree" (pp. 126-130) and "A New Debate..." (pp. 131-134), and
then answer the following questions. Don't forget to cite, and be prepared to
discuss the articles.
1. In the first
article, what does Bowen say is the purpose of a "personal education"
and what does he say is the purpose of a "practical education"? Give an example of two things you should be
able to do more effectively using your
personal education and give an example of two things you should be able to do
