Looking ahead to your Career Panel Discussion

Your last panel discussion will be presented on Monday, December 7.  In groups of 3-4 you will be presenting information you found on (1) how to explore less well-known professions, (2) the characteristics of one well-known and popular profession, and (3) the characteristics of at least 2 professions related to but different from those popular professions.  On Monday, November 30 you will be allowed to name two related and less familiar careers to go along with your well-known profession.  Each career will be presented by only one group, so you should come in prepared to name related careers to explore.  The groups prepared to specify their related careers will have the first chance to do so.

Your Assignment

·         Acquire information about the one familiar career your group selected plus two less familiar, but related careers that your group selects.  The information should include

1.       Duties and Responsibilities and Chances of Advancement

2.       Skills and Abilities needed to be successful in the profession

3.       Education and Training required (including degrees and certification) and average time it takes to complete all of this career preparation

4.       Work Setting (e.g. office, laboratory, store) and Work Places (e.g. school, hospital)

5.       Average Salary (in California, if available) and Job Outlook (projected availability of jobs)

·         Record the information in a PowerPoint table template provided.

·         Highlight the similarities and differences between each less familiar job and the more familiar job, by using a light blue background color for a similarity and yellow background color for a difference.

·         Provide any other information you think will be useful to your colleagues.

·         Cite your source of information in the table.  Here are some sources to begin exploration:

       Road Trip Nation interviews

       http://www.labormarketinfo.edd.ca.gov/?PAGEID=139

       http://www.bls.gov/oco/

   http://www.cacareerzone.org/index.html

Your group will give a 5-10 minute presentation on your findings on Monday, December 7, using the PowerPoint slides you made.  All group members must speak and be able to answer questions.

Please keep aware that while you are finding out about some professions, we have not had time to really find out about each of you:  your developing interests, abilities, values.  Keeping in touch with yourself and the Career Center advisors should help you do that and to find which professions match your profile.

Journal Prompt:

In your journal entry, address the following questions:

If you could take any courses at the university that you wanted and you did not have to think about having a job, what are 3 courses (use the course number and title from the catalog) you would take?  For each of the courses you named, explain why you would want to take the course.
