F HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS MAY BE DONE INDIVIDUALLY OR IN PAIRS (WITH PRIOR INSTRUCTOR APPROVAL)

a. Case Assignments (All Must Be Titled and Have Student Name(s))

CASE 1 (LEVEL 1 DFD): Using Visible Analyst Workbench (VAW), reproduce the DFD shown in Figure 6.1-4 (p. 192) of the Martin textbook. Do not be concerned with the letters in the upper left corner of diagram or the slashes in the lower right corner. Save your work because you will use it again later.

CASE 2 (LEVEL 3 DFD): Using VAW and the DFD you developed in CASE 1, NEST Process 3 of the DFD (Figure 6.1-4 of p. 192) to obtain Figure 6.1-12 (p. 196) of the Martin textbook. To do this correctly, you must explode through Level 2 (Figure 6.1-11, p. 195) and then to Level 3. Turn in all exploded levels. (Note: Don't try to reproduce the exact labels on the data stores, e.g., D7 on VCR Storage.)

CASE 3 (QUALITY CONTROL): Using VAW's ANALYZE function, check the quality of the DFD you developed for CASE 2. Turn in a listing of the errors detected, an explanation of why each error has occurred, and how to resolve the error (if possible). (The VAW Tutorial discusses the ANALYZE function.) Don't merely use VAW-generated analysis--I want you to THINK!

CASE 4 (DATA STORE SPECIFICATION): Using VAW and the DFD you developed for CASE 2, reproduce the Data Store Specification shown in Figure 6.1-21 (p. 204) of the Martin textbook. Turn in a printout showing the data dictionary for this data store. This also should show data dictionary entries for all associated data elements such as "custfname," "custlname," etc.

CASE 5 (STRUCTURED ENGLISH): Using VAW and the DFD you developed for CASE 2, create a VAW Data Dictionary entry using structured English for Process 3.1.3 (p. 196), "Enter VCR Transaction." (A little imagination will be required; state all assumptions.)

b. Critical Thinking Assignments

CT 1 (DATA FLOW DIAGRAM [DFD]): Prepare a physical DFD for the Goodbyte Pizza Company case found in the Martin textbook (p. 35). Start with a context diagram and explode to Level -1.

CT 2: Complete Exercises #2 through #7 on p. 285 of the Martin textbook. State all assumptions and show all work. For Exercise #6, use the average of the ROIs for the last five years. Also, assume a six-year rather than a five-year period of analysis.

CT 3: Create a decision table for a check acceptance policy at a store which you must identify (e.g., Burger King). The actions in this table will be to (a) accept the check, (b) refuse the check, or (c) call the supervisor. Explain all cases where you specify "Call Supervisor." The decision rules will be based on a check acceptance policy of your own making, but must be dependent on the following conditions:

Don't skip any steps shown in the Martin textbook.

CT 4: Develop the appropriate coding structures for the following situation.

(1) The Vendor Identification Number is to be composed of (a) numeric codes for area and product group; (b) a unique serial code; and (c) a self-checking digit. Show how the check digit will be computed

(2) Separate codes must also be developed for (a) Vendor Type (wholesale, internal or retail) and (b) Shipment Mode (trucks, air, mail, rail, etc.).

c. ACCESS Screen Design

Turn in a disk containing an ACCESS Form-filling screen design for a Customer Billing system. The screen should include:

(1) A unique title.

(2) Symmetrical layout of all appropriate fields.

(3) At least one Combo box.

Also turn in a printout of your screen.

3. SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS   Return to Homework Menu

4. GRADING    Return to Homework Menu

Homework will be "graded" with ü, ü+, or ü-. If it meets specifications, I will award a ü+ or ü- when either exceptional effort/quality (+) or minimal effort/quality (-) is demonstrated. Homework points will be awarded based upon the following criteria:

ü+ = 6 Points

ü = 4 Points

ü- = 2 Points
