Homework (Due Feb. 11 at 11:59 pm)

• Make sure to complete the reading questions for Reischauer’s The Japanese Today (Part 1: The Setting) by Feb. 11 at 11:59 pm. The reading material was given to you on the first day. For those who did not receive, they are posted on WebCT (Lesson – Week 1 – Reischauer - PDF). You can also obtain the copy at the Library Reserve. You can check out for 2 hours or make copies. If you use ONE CARD, it costs 5 cent each. You will submit your homework (typed) to Assignment on WebCT. You write “Reading Assignment #1” in Subject.  10 pts will be given to an excellent work. One day late homework will receive 50% of the grade. Two day late homework will receive no points.

Group Presentation

* On Feb. 12, you will give a short presentation (3-4 minutes) about the assigned region. First we make a group of 2-4 people.  It is required that each group makes a handout at for presentation.  Grading rubric will be created in class.

(1) Go to Japan National Tourist Organization, http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/index.html

(2) Locate the assigned region and list prefectures and major cities in the region
  Step 1: Go to http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/index.html

  Step 2: Look for "Find a Location" (On the top left).

  Step 3: Below "Find a Location" you will see "Browse by Designation" or "Browse the Map of Japan."

  Step 4: Start clicking assigned prefectures (Start from "Overview")

(3) Describe climate of the region (e.g. temperature, seasons, etc.)

(4) Describe major natural characteristics (e.g. mountains, rivers, World Natural Heritage, etc.)

(5) List major festival(s) and sightseeing spots in the region

(6)  Present an overview of the regions and create 5 questions on the region

  • 3. What are important values for the Japanese?  How do they differ from American values?  Why so?
  • 4. Discuss Japanese ways of showing disagreement.
  • 5. Discuss Japanese ways of solving conflicts.
  • 6. Discuss Japanese ways of taking responsibilities.
