Information about Geology 8T Quiz 3

Quiz 3 is about resources, rocks in general and igneous rocks more specifically – it will be helpful to read about resourcees on p.31-32, rocks versus minerals on p. 39, and igneous rocks on p.45-47.  I will pick 3 of the following questions to ask you:

  1. Give an example of two products classified under physical – name the product, the mineral used in that product, and explain the physical property of that mineral that makes it so useful in that product. A definition of the physical category is given on p.32 of your lab manual, the Everyday Minerals handout (on a half sheet) that you got in class may help you as well- a pdf of this half sheet is available on SacCT - go to the 8T SacCt web site and click on 'pdf doucments' in the left hand side bar.

She says to you "Hey, what's the name of this rock?" Explain to Alice why galena is a mineral NOT a rock. Be sure to include the difference between a mineral and a rock in your explanation. Review the key concepts for the introducing Rocks activity listed on p.39

  4. What makes a rock igneous?

  5. Explain why some igneous rocks have visible minerals whereas the minerals in other igneous rocks are too small to see without a microscope.
