The Algorithm Collection Project (ACP)
is Coordinated by
Professor Daniel Clark Orey
California State University, Sacramento

The purpose of the Algorithm Collection Project is to collect and disseminate alternative algorithms in mathematical problem solving from all over the world. We are honored to have received a Pedagogy Enhancement Award for 2003-2004 from the The Center for Teaching and Learning at California State University.

Currently, at this stage of the project, participants are gathering and studying the four basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) in arithmetic.  We are interested in the unique links between language and the algorithms we use to solve problems.  Much of the data collected has been gleaned from interviews from newly arrived immigrant adolescent high school students to Northern California.  The next stage of the Algorithm Collection Project will look at other aspects of classroom mathematics as done by teachers and students in many countries.

We are extremely interested in learning how you may have learned and do:

  • The basic arithmetic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division;
  • Memorization of basic facts;
  • Algebra;
  • Geometry.
