Some of My Most Favorite Doors

253 Rua Quintino Bocaíuva, Amparo, SP,  July 2002

I have been enamored of this door in Amparo ever since coming there.  One night, when the TV's were blaring, and the nephews were particularly  annoying... I happened to notice the sunset... I grabbed my camera and ran to the door... something told me that  it was going to be  good. Seconds later the sun fell behind the hill, and the street lights came on. It has been a mainstay on my homepage ever since.

Sonia came to spend the weekend in Amparo, and we were obliged to show her the sights.  As we wandered about in the mighty Fiat,  I drove by the door. I had to take a picture, of course... I love this door because they paint it every year, and leave the rest to nature.

It wouldn't be a trip to Amparo with out a pass by of my door...

Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brasil, July 2004

I stayed at a great little place down the hill from this door.  It is on the side of a church, where at night local kids come to make love and smoke maconha behind the wall.  But during the day, one might walk through the church yard to the posada.  It was really cold, and I stopped and noticed the door. Green and yellow are the Brazilian national colors.

There is an altogether charming little town near to Amparo, called Monte Alegre "happy mountain".

Mariana, MG, July 2002

Its not often that a door has its own saint. I am convinced that whatever 94 has behind it, is most important.

Milton's Mother took a look at this picture, and asked me why I take pictures of old, run-down houses..

This is the door to an outhouse on an old coffee farm.  The buildings were about 200 years old.  There were plants in the garden that were given to the owners by Dom Pedro II, the last Emperor of Brazil.

Some doors just mean a lot to me. They may not necessarily be the prettiest doors at all, but it may have history and meaning and in this case, a lot of love.  There is a noise this door makes as you open it, and it slams shut, that makes me miss my Grandmother, still.  This house was built by my Uncle for her, when he was 16 years old.

A great day, a super walk above the town... and found this door along the road...

Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, July 2005

On a trip to Uruguay, we took a tour to this town about 50 km across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires. They had a number of old cars parked like this so you could sit and take a picture.

Montevideo, Uruguay, July 2005

Montevideo  is a lovely city, with an old part that is full of amazing buildings with no means for restoration. This one hosted a group of English sparrows who were busy coming in and out of the second floor.

Montevideo, Uruguay, July 2005

Despite being a gray city overall, there are these shocking points of color.  As the city finds a way to restore its older parts, they are beginning as well to paint the buildings with color.

Nepal, Summer 2007

I was invited to be a visiting professor at Kathmandu University, while there I went on many walks and enjoyed the unusual doors.
