Course Description:
The course was developed, as part of a plan to meet CCTC ‘s
(The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing)
new technology standard
for Multiple and Single Subject Credential Candidates.
The course is designed so that pre-service teachers experience
a
program which enables
them to simultaneously improve their technological skills,
while
developing their understanding and knowledge of how to
effectively infuse technology
into their teaching.
The course is a practical introduction to the use and
applications of computer-based technologies in the K-12
grade classroom. Major topics include basic computer
terminology and functions, educational software and website
evaluation and integration into instruction, using telecommunication,
multimedia
authoring, and issues relating to the
impact of computers in a democratic society.
Course Objective:
The purpose of this course is to enable students to simultaneously
improve their technological skills while developing their
understanding and knowledge of how to effectively infuse
technology into their teaching.
Through participation in this course students will gain
skills and knowledge in the following areas:
1. Basic computer and software operation.
2. Use of a variety of software tools (word-processing,
paint/draw, databases, spreadsheets, etc.) to support
teaching and learning in
their classrooms.
3. Use of the Internet in their own professional growth
and in instruction.
4. Use of communication tools.
5. Use of multimedia.
6. Evaluation and integration of computer-assisted instruction.
Required student materials:
Students will be required to subscribe to a web-based
program called TaskStream. This will give them access
to a series of online modules
for gaining computer skills. This will be in place of
a textbook. Storage of work will depend on the facility
where the class meets, you will
need to transport files. Options: 3.5 disk, 100Mb Zip,
TaskStream uploading of files.
Assignments:
Participants will be graded on a combination of completion
of hands-on activities, submission of projects (PowerPoint,
spreadsheet, telecommunications,
Lessons from TaskStream) and use of a word processor.
Participants will build up a collection of artifacts
which will be used to develop
an electronic portfolio in 330B which addresses the skills
and activities identified below and the CTC Foundation
standards.
Grading
This is a credit/no credit class. There
are a total of 625 points. In order to receive credit you must complete
all assignments and score
at least 575/625 points.
This will be a collaborative approach with multiple revisions
if necessary. All assignments may be submitted for review,
as a matter of fact you
are encouraged to submit the assignments requesting input.
We will then engage in an online input/response communication
until we both
feel that the requirement has been met.
