Spreadsheet Projects

Teacher Utility - Using a spreadsheet to organize orders and crunch numbers - Do the math..

Teacher Produced Tool for Student Use: Students were doing a stock market simulation. We had calculators all over the lab, papers everywhere.  We realized that by building a template for the students they could keep it organized, the math would be correct and they would get an introduction to spreadsheets.

The Survey - This shows how you can create impressive charts with little data.

Mrs. Bayne:To further student skills and understanding of graphs I asked each child to develop a survey that they could easily complete in 2 days at 6th grade lunch.  Students compiled the data and entered this information onto a spread sheet. The spread sheet was then used to develop 2 types of graphs (a bar graph and a pie graph).  These graphs were colorful, graphic, representations of the survey data.

Fishville - An Three Day Fishing Trip - Students use the spreadsheet to calculate the expenses, taxes and grand total.

Mrs. Bayne: I raise salmon in my classroom.  The students use this project as a spring board into science, math and technology.  Students are required to record all money spent on the imaginary vacations.  This includes the motel, gas, fishing equipment, a river guide, grocery store, resturant and a fishing license.  These totals were put into a spread sheet.  These spread sheets were then used to account for and record all money spent and daily totals.

Goldfish Heartbeats:  7th grade students did an experiment where they measured the heat rate of a goldfish as it was subjected to different temperatures of water.  The chart compares each student's results with the class average.

The Effect of Osmosis on an Egg:  7th grade students did an experiment with and egg, salt and water.  They were making a visual representation of osmosis, measuring the weight and circumference of and egg as it reacted to salt and water.  They had about 6 recordings of data and were required to put the data into a spreadsheet and then create the graph.

6th Grade Math Class:  You have just graduated from college and it is time to make a budget and experience the real world.  Kids have to create a budget for a year, research insurance, cars, rent, and all the expenses that come with life in the real world.
