SPANISH 142 COURSE OUTLINE
Name of Course: Advanced Spanish Conversation
Instructor: Dr. Jorge A. Santana, Units: 3.0
Catalogue description: This course is designed to increase language fluency and to acquire new vocabulary through intensive conversational practice, based on topics of contemporary interest.
Required background experience: Upper division standing or permission of instructor.
Objectives:
a. To increase the student's vocabulary
b. To encourage students to express themselves, particularly making use of idiomatic and every day expressions.
c. To gain self confidence in the use of the Spanish language.
Text: Use of text to be determined. Hispanic source materials will be used, such as internet articles, newspapers, magazines, articles, videos, etc.
Tests:
- Vocabulary and grammar reviews from the text sources/chalk boards = 250 pts.
- Two oral presentations, First one worth 50 pts., second one 100 pts = 150
- Attendance = 100 pts.
Total points for course: 500 pts.
Grading Policy:
a. Daily evaluation by means of questions.
b. Oral presentations. Two: length of presentation will depend on class size.
c. Class discussion/participation in Spanish.
d. Vocabulary exams
e. Attendance: (worth 100 pts.; 5 pts discounted for each class missed)Grade break down:
A = 450 - 500
B = 400 - 449
C = 350 - 399
D = 300 - 349Note:
Native speakers enrolled in the class will work, on occasions, with
non-native speakers of the language.
