Teaching Mathematics:

If you are interested in teaching math in junior high school, then (in most cases) you must either obtain a single subject credential in mathematics, or you must obtain an additional authorization (to add to your existing credential)

To obtain a single single subject credential in mathematics, one must demonstrate subject matter competency in mathematics. This can be done either by passing the CSET or by completing a subject matter program

If you have (or plan to have) a credential in another area, then you may add to that credential a Subject Matter Authorization in Mathematics (which will authorize you to teach mathematics in junior high school, and in some cases in high school), by completing 32 units of mathematics that covers certain areas. For more information, please go to Subject Matter Authorization Guideline Book

The CSET consists of three subtests. The first subtest is Algebra/Number Theory, the second subtest is Geometry/Statistics, and the third subtest is Calculus/History of Mathematics. Passing the first two subtests demonstrates subject matter competency for a Foundational Level Math Credential (which authorizes the holder to teach through Alg II). For more information on the CSET (including sample questions) please go to www.cset.nesinc.com. For some recommendations on texts and other information about the CSET, please click here: cset info

The subject matter program at CSUS consists of Math 30, 31, 32, 35, 45, 108, 110AB, 130AB, 102, 121, 190, 193, Stat 1, C Sc 10 (this is one of the tracks for a BA in Mathematics)
