ArenaWatch 2006

What happens to the arena in Sacramento will be of huge importance to the private enterprise/commercial recreation and event planning industries. The Sac Bee has written sometimes four articles a day this summer on different aspects of the arena deal. Articles have popped up on the Front Page, in the Business section and in Sports. On top of that, the Opinion pages have also spent a great deal of space talking about the arena, the owners, the team and the proposed location(s). Need proof of the importance/significance of recreation in people's lives? First, just look at the number of articles in the last few days. Second, just look at the number of reader comments to the arena articles (sometimes several hundred) compared to articles on trivial things like the Iraq war, AIDS in South Africa or the region's minor levee situation. It becomes quite clear that commercial recreation is THE most important industry in the world. :-)
What follows is a list of the Bee's articles (some for, some against, some totally uncertain) starting in July 2006 when the most resent push for an arena agreement began. Bee reporters and columnists, Mary Lynne Vellinga, Jon Ortiz, Terri Hardy, Ailene Voisin and Marcos Bretén all contributed (some articles are also included here that appeared in the Sacramento Business Journal by Kelly Johnson and Adam Weintraub). There were so many articles that not all have been listed here, never mind the fact that there were also several articles in June and May. Was it all a giant publicity campaign put on by the team's/arena's owners and the city/county, or is it simply the press keeping us up-to-date on legitimate talks to reach an amiable deal? Or maybe the press were just taking advantage of the situation themselves? You be the judge. The farther down the list you go, the more recent the article. (If you find an article that you don't see listed here, please email a link to shaw@csus.edu)
