French 1B Overview (Suter)

 Course Description

Elementary French - second semester. Course focuses on the development of elementary linguistic skills, with emphasis on the spoken language. The relationship of the language to French civilization and culture is given special attention.

This is a 4 unit course. It meets four days a week. A lot of homework is given, but the course is fun and students do learn French! This course will provide the beginning foundation for developing the skill of understanding and communicating in French.

 Technology Requirements

Students will need an electronic mail account and computer access to the Web. All CSUS students enrolled in one or more units can create a SacLink account for electronic mail and Internet services. Although a home computer with a high speed modem running Netscape or Internet Explorer would be beneficial, students can use the Web from one of the campus student labs.

Computing Recommendations

Pentium PC running Windows 98 or higher, Windows NT or XP, or Macintosh compatible with System 7.1 or higher

128M RAM memory, 200Mhz or faster speed processor

High Speed Internet (cable, DSL, broadband)

Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher, or NetScape 5.0 or higher

Campus SacLink account (required for WebCT access)

Microphone connected to computer with appropriate sound card, speakers on computer or headphone with microphone
Computer Skills

Comfortable using the computer and browsing the Web

Familiarity with SacLink

Word processing skills; Windows environment skills; uploading files and multiple applications

Individual participation on the Web assignments & Participation in electronic discussions, using WebCT

Ability to follow technical instructions to download software as required, create Desktop shortcuts and run installations.


Successful Student Characteristics

Discipline to complete homework by deadlines; motivation to read, write, speak and participate fully in class activities; and time to devote approximately 12 hours a week to a 4-unit course.
