Beginning & Intermediate French Online |
Offering French online has been a pilot
program at CSUS from 2005-2007. Pilot Program: Continued Online program: This language will be taught for 4 semesters, to encompass Beginning and Intermediate French. The courses will be rigorous, emphasizing reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, in French. These courses require that students have access to high-speed internet, a reliable computer with a microphone, and various free software downloads to use Web technologies in the delivery of the course. Students will be expected to study 8-12 hours, outside of the 4 hours of classtime; all of the course work is done at a computer. Students considering taking these courses should have good computer skills. Completion of courses 1B and 2B meet graduation requirements at CSUS and other campuses, and entry into the French Minor or Major programs. Check with your advisor from your own campus. The first two semesters (Beginning: French 1A and French 1B) will be taught as 75% Web-enhanced and 25% live or electronically live, for Fall 2005/Spring 2006 and Fall 2006/Spring 2007 (offered both semesters starting in Fall 2006). CSUS students may attend totally in person or using the Web-enhanced option. Distant students will be using Web technology and computers to "attend" class and to meet live with the instructor. One hour a week will be required attendance in person for CSUS students or live electronically for distant students. These two courses will both be repeated in Fall 2006 and Spring 2007, in the online format. Professors Kevin Elstob, Nicole Buffard-O'Shea, and/or Beatrice Kelley will teach the third and fourth semesters (Intermediate: French 2A and French 2B) during Fall 2006 and Spring 2007. They will offer the course as a traditional on-campus course to CSUS students, and distant students will attend in real-time, using video streaming technology. They will be expected to participate conversationally with the teacher and students on the CSUS campus. Four hours a week will be required attendance in person for CSUS students, or live electronically for distant students. Note that the pilot period for these courses has ended. The third and fourth semesters are not offered as online courses. Registration is normal for CSUS students. Distant students enroll at their own campus, using a Concurrent Enrollment form available at their Registration Department. Open university students follow the procedures for enrollment with the College of Continuing Education (Extended Education) at their own campuses. High school students will enroll through the ACE program Off-Campus courses. Qualifications for
