___"So where are you from originally?"__
-----When meeting someone for the first time, such a question is common and is generally responded to with little thought or concern. However, I try to avoid answering this question at all costs. You see, I am from the small, agricultural town of Woodland, California. Granted, Woodland is an ever-growing community, rapidly becoming not just a center for farming, but for industry, as well. Yet, those who live in the fast-paced city of Sacramento typically view Woodland as merely a simple-minded community surrounded by trees and farm animals.
-----Although my response to the aforementioned question is vague and misleading ("Oh, I'm from the Sacramento area."), nothing can change the fact that I am a native of Woodland. Born to a high school instructor and an administrative assistant in 1977, I lived in Woodland for the first 17 years of my life. During this time, I was active in all types of sports, as well as in dance. While maintaining an A average throughout my primary and secondary educational years, I competed in cross-country, softball, and basketball. In addition, I was active in my church and enjoyed the challenge of studying the Bible.
-----Currently, I am a senior at California State University, Sacramento, majoring in Liberal Studies. Upon graduation, it is my goal to enter the teacher credential program and eventually teach at the elementary school level. Third and fourth grades are of particular interest to me, as children at this stage are mature enough to respond to complex ideas, yet they haven't entered puberty. As a result, most third and fourth graders still possess a desire to learn and respect their teachers.
-----While most of my time is spent in class, at home studying, or at work, I do enjoy swing dancing, working out at the gym, and spending time with my family (especially with my five-year-old sister). As a firm believer in honesty, however, I must admit that much of my free time is devoted to my boyfriend, Scott. We have seriously discussed the possibility of marriage, although a date has yet to be set.
-----Because my schedule does not allow for casual reading, I cannot foster my love for literature unless reading is part of my university education. Fortunately, Liberal Studies majors are permitted to choose one area of concentration. By selecting literature as my concentration, I will be introduced to a variety of authors and literary genres. English 190C is the first of my literature courses. I eagerly await learning about the world of science fiction and hope to bring that world into my own classroom in the years to come.
