E/M QUESTIONS FROM GROUP DISCUSSION
Chapter 3A VERBS PART 1
1. 3/7: The stream ran THROUGH THE
VALLEY. Why isn't RAN a transitive? Isn't the valley receiving the action of the
stream?
2. 3/8. Wars go on and on all over the
world. What is the verb here? The book says GO but what is ON AND ON?
3. 7/1: They will remain together
provided that Father CONSENTS. Why is the subjunctive used here?
4. 7/14: If he WANTS to succeed, he must
work. Why is this in the indicative?
5. Page 48. Example of the active. THEY HAVE GONE HOME.
Is this correct? I thought GO is not a
transitive verb.
6. 9/5: IS YOUR HOUSE BEING PAINTED? Why
is this passive? It's a question.
7. 9/6: The barn door must be rehung.
Why is this passive? Is this inconsistent with calling SHE ATE FOR HOURS ON END
intransitive?
8. 20/2: Jason found that there IS more to skiing than buying new skis.
Why is the answer IS rather than WAS?
