Nov 15 - Discussion Questions
- What if you know another colleague is teaching with a
strong personal bias and is not presenting their students
with objective material? Is this an ethical violation?
Does this vary from professor to professor/department to
department?
- We have discussed at length the ethics regarding
inappropriate student/teacher relationships. What if your
ex-spouse, partner etc. has a new significant other that
has registered for your class (it's plausible...we are
still somewhat young). What is the ethical thing to do??
- Is it ethical to have one of your students babysit your
child/children? What about housesititng if you are out of
town?
- Is it seen as any worse when a graduate student and a
professor have an intimate relationship as opposed to an
undergrad and a professor? Many of the most prominant
females in psychology actually were married to thier
major professors and probably fell in love when they were
their research assistants.
- Is there ever a situation in which it is okay for an
instructor to socialize with his or her students on a
regular basis outside of the educational institution?
- How should an instructor react if they begin to feel that
their interactions with a student outside of class - as a
TA or in clubs/committees - are influencing the students
grade in their class, especially if the student is not
doing very well?
- When preparing to teach a course is it ethical to teach
on topics which may be unfamiliar to you. Teachers often
are portrayed as experts on subject material, how often
is it that a professor only has limited amounts of
experience with the topic he or she is teaching, and is
it right to portray yourself as knowing more than you do?
