Campaign Finance Regulation Data Comments

These data are described in detail in “Measuring the Stringency of State Campaign Finance Regulation” (2005), forthcoming at State Politics and Policy Quarterly 5(3).

The excel file has the sub-index and overall stringency scores on the first worksheet and detailed data on the second worksheet.  The Stata file has the detailed data only.

The first eight columns after the overall stringency scores and the sub-index scores are the disclosure items; the next seven columns are the expenditure limit/public financing items, and the last seven columns are the contribution limit items.

I am currently coding additional years and these will be posted when they are completed.  However, these scores are fairly stable over time, as most states obviously do not make annual or regular changes to their campaign finance laws.

If you have any questions or comments about the data please feel free to e-mail me at witkoc@csus.edu.
