Study Abroad Scholarships

Our goal is to make study abroad accessible for Sacramento State student. In most cases, financial aid may be used to study on a Sacramento State or CSU-IP Program. There are a variety of Sacramento State-housed, nationally competitive, regionally focused and program sponsor scholarship opportunities for study abroad.  

Sacramento State Scholarships

Sacramento State President’s Circle Study Abroad Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria

  • A student must have been selected to participate in a Study Abroad program sponsored or endorsed by Sacramento State.
  • Eligible student from any major.
  • Eligible class levels at start of study abroad program: Sophomore, Junior, and Senior
  • Minimum GPA: 2.75
  • Financial need is required, as determined by the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).
  • Full-time Sacramento State student at the time of application and during study abroad program.
  • A student must complete the required application, administered by International Programs and Global Engagement, and submit with the required supplemental materials.

 

Treis Study Abroad Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria

  • A student must have been selected to participate in a Study Abroad program sponsored or endorsed by Sacramento State.

Benjamin A Gilman International Scholarship

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness.

The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.

 

National Security Education Program Boren Awards

The National Security Education Program (NSEP) was established by the National Security Education Act of 1991. It is guided by a mission that seeks to lead in development of the national capacity to educate U.S. citizens, understand foreign cultures, strengthen U.S. economic competitiveness and enhance international cooperation and security.

 

Fulbright U.S. Student Program

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or English Teaching Assistantships.  Applicants must be U.S. citizens and must have a conferred bachelor's degree or the equivalent before the start of the grant.

 

Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia)

The Freeman-ASIA program is designed to support U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. The program’s goal is to increase the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures.

The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) invests in promising students with financial need who wish to study abroad. Potential applicants who meet our eligibility requirements may participate on any international education program that meets their academic objectives.

 

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Seventy-five $1,000 grants are awarded each year (50 Session A / 25 Session B).

 

Region-Specific Scholarships

Chinese Government Scholarship Program

The Educational Office, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, in Washington, D.C., has approved the Chinese Government Scholarship awards for U.S. undergraduate students attending AASCU member colleges and universities. Scholarships are for one academic year (Sept.- July), or semester programs in the Fall (Sept.- Feb.) or Spring (March- July). 


Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan

The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major U.S. corporations, through donations to the nonprofit US-Japan Bridging Foundation, makes it possible to award about 100 scholarships each year to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year. Applications are accepted twice a year for Bridging Scholarships.

 

BUTEX Scholarship for North American Students

Each year BUTEX awards a number of scholarships to students studying abroad for either a semester or for a whole academic year. The value of each scholarship is £500 and will be paid to the winners once they have arrived and registered at their host university.

 

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Scholarship

Highly qualified undergraduate students are invited to apply for scholarships funding study, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany. The goal of this program is to support study abroad in Germany and at German universities.

 

The National Italian American Foundation

The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) awards scholarships to 60-70 outstanding students in a variety of academic disciplines for use during the following academic year. Scholarships range from $2,500 – $12,000. (membership required)
